Who Is Invest Ottawa

Invest Ottawa is the lead economic development agency for knowledge-based industries in Canada’s Capital. It supports entrepreneurs, startups, scaleups, small businesses, investors, talent, and partners across the Ottawa innovation ecosystem. Its work includes venture programs, global expansion, Area X.O for testing next-generation technology, and Bayview Yards. As a catalyst and connector, it bridges public mandates and private innovation to drive jobs and inclusive growth.

I was responsible for social media across the organization’s brand channels: Invest Ottawa, Area X.O, Bayview Yards, Work in Ottawa, and the Venture streams. I planned and wrote platform-specific content for LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and occasionally X, covered event promotion, program launches, partner and sponsor recaps, talent recruitment, careers announcements, and executive communications.

I worked with strategists and creative partners, and supported with massive events and campaigns such as GCXpo, International Women’s Month, AccelerateOTT, and D.I Hub.

My Experience

Let me tell you about the best juggling act I’ve ever been paid to do.

I’ve been the one behind the posts for four brands: Invest Ottawa, Bayview Yards, Area X.O, and our Talent Program. Three of them run on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and X, so yes, I’ve been managing a multi-platform, multi-audience social life at the same time.

On Monday I’m writing for local small businesses
Tuesday it’s defence and tech startups
Thursday I’m talking smart agriculture and smart mobility, and somewhere in between I’m rallying summer company programs that support students.

Every audience wants something different, and every timeline is urgent. I’ve learned that writing for a farmer and writing for a defence startup are very different skills, and I’m a better communicator for having done both.

Event season is where I get to flex. I’ve helped market upcoming events, shown up for full-day social coverage, and turned the whole day into a wrap-up post before anyone could ask where the coffee went. It’s fast, it’s a little chaotic, and it’s exactly how I like my work.

My proudest contribution so far has been supporting the Defence Innovation Hub (D.I Hub) and its proposal to make Ottawa-Gatineau the home of a Defence Resilience Security Bank. The core idea is that Canada’s Capital Region is where policy meets prototype and where Canada’s ideas become its armour. My job was to take a big national conversation and make it land with real people, in language that makes someone stop scrolling.
